January 9, 2018 :13: First Meeting of 2018 (No Audio)

January 16th, 2018 by

Hi Folks,

Not the best ‘ju ju’ for starting the new year.

Apparently, I forgot to hit the record button. That means, even though we did our audio stream, we don’t has a recording for the podcast. Being frustrated I set this aside. Today I ‘picked it up’ while getting ready for today’s computer club meeting. I hope you guys find this info helpful:

  1. HP Laptops Bursting into Flames – check if your battery is on the list. more info [here].
  2. Apple’s ‘Battery-Gate’ – they’ve admitted to old phone slowdowns and are offering battery replacements for $29 (typically $79). more info [here].
  3. Meltdown & Spectre – this is a big one:

Speculative Execution (SE) is the problem, and it’s  standard in many modern CPUs. Growing use since the 60s.

The vulnerability in SE was discovered in June, and has virtually been unheard of till now. Tech journalists have been under an embargo, so manufactures would have time have to work on patches, and are now pushing out those fixes.

These patches will slow down all processors (i.e., computer, tablets, phones, and internet servers). Pathes are required to practically all operating systems running on practically all CPUs.  (side note: Not the RasberryPi – it doesn’t use Speculative execution.)

The only real fix to this problem is a new CPU design use different performance enhancing techniques.

For a good video covering how this vulnerability functions see YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syAdX44pokE

Well that covers most of last weeks meeting. Now I am going to concentrate on today’s meeting.

Thanks for all the interest!

Happy New Year! Club is Back! First Meeting is Today at Tequilas at 9:15am – Sorry no YouTube

January 9th, 2018 by

“Club is Back!”, yells Scott with excitement, but then he frowns and adds, “…but no YouTube”.

Hello Everybody,

I hope you all had a good holiday and a happy New Year. I am excited to get back to it with you guys. We’ll be at Tequilas starting at 9:15 and everybody is welcome. Boy! Do we have some topics!

Maybe, you head about the “flaming HP laptops”, or “Apple Slowing down you phone”, or the “Meltdown” of Internet. …What? WOW! it’s true..We’re nine days into this new year with more tech drama then you’ve ever imagined.

Well, I hope to see you there, but if you can’t make it, then you can try listen to our live audio stream [here]. I say try, because I will be bring my old netbook. The “studio” is in the shop for repair and may not be with us for the next couple of meetings. I’ll do my best to provide an audio stream, and a podcast recording, but YouTube is gone for now.

Thanks for all your interest, and I’ll see you at club at 9:15.

(Belated) Happy New Year – You have to attend our next meeting

January 5th, 2018 by

(Belated) Happy New Year from all of us at the San Carlos Computer Club! Now. You have to attend our next meeting.

Our first meeting of 2018 will be on Tuesday, January 9, at Tequilas starting at 9:15am and I encourage you to attend, since there is a good chance I will not be streaming. My ‘studio’ laptop is at its manufacturer getting the battery replaced under warranty. That means, No youTube live stream until it returns. I will be carrying my old netbook that was once used for recording our podcast. The netbook has been refreshed, but I am still setting it up for business. Hopefully, by Tuesday I’ll be ready to do an audio stream and a clubCast recording for our podcast, but I am not making any promises.

Well, I can’t wait to see you guys. I am really interested in what kinds of new toys you got over the holiday, and what kinds of issues you ran into while celebrating with your families.

Hope everyone is good.

December 05, 2017 :10: GoFccYourself and Free Ice Cream

December 5th, 2017 by

Hi All!

Great Meeting!

You can listen to the audio with the player at the bottom of this post, or watch the YouTube [here]. Some of the topics we covered were:

+ Net Neutrality: They are voting on December 14, and I think we should leave the current regulations in place. If you want to help you can make your opinions know to to congress people and to the FCC.

+ Malware scanning and recommendations for the Windows 10 environment.

+ John McCain asks twitter for 74 more followers and losses 22,516

+ Application Recommendation: Medical Spanish by Mavro for Android, also for iPhone. This looks like a great app to communicate with Spanish healthcare. This could be a killer app for ex-pat retired in Mexico.

I had a great time. I hope you all did as well. Maybe we’ll see you at the church service for free icream!

Thanks for joining us, and #techOn!
