December 2 Clubcast is Now Available: Ninth meeting: VPNs (again) Roku/Netflix, ChromeBox/Book, Smart TVs, Black Friday sales, and even a Spanish lesson at the beginning

December 2nd, 2014 by

Hi Clubbers,

I hope everyone had a good holiday. I hope it was ful of friends, family, and turkey.

We started recording our meeting a little early today. The conversation is very random and includes some Spanish lessons. If our pre-meeting dialog is too much for you, then just fast forward to the start of our meeting (at 7mins, 45seconds.)

We had a lot of people join us this morning. Even my folks showed up. And, for no agenda, we sure found a lot to talk about. Chromebox, Chromebooks, Roku, FireTV, Chromecast,  smartTV, Black  Friday shopping, VPNs, PhotoShop, and even more.

It was an awesome ninth meeting. If you missed it, then you can hear the recording from the link below.

You can join us at Tequila’s or you can tune in on Tuesdays (9:15-10:15am AZ time) with our chat-room and live audio stream found at http://sccClub.org.  If you want to receive this recording in iTunes then search the iTunes store for ‘The San Carlos Computer Club’.

Thanks for listening. Please leave comments and rate us in iTunes.

Great Primer Article “What the Heck is a Roku (or Apple TV or Amazon Fire) and Why Do I Need One?”

April 15th, 2014 by

I just came across this article from Yahoo!TECH. It’s a good primer into your options for devices to stream videos from the internet to your TV. It covers all the options we’ve talked about in club. I think it’s a recommended read for everyone in our club.

New Chat-Room Now Available

March 16th, 2014 by

Hi Everybody,

I just finished adding a chat-room to our club blog. You can find it here: http://internationalcs.net/blogs/sccclub/chat/. Or click on the ‘chat-room’ link in the column on the right.

A chat-room is an easy way to have an online discussion, in real-time, with a group of people.  It’s easy to use: 1) type in a nickname you want to use, and 2) click the connect button. You’ll see a window with three parts: 1) Main box: a history of conversation and information, 2) text field at the bottom: type anything you want to say , and 3) the column on the right contains a list of people in the chat-room.

This chat-room can be used anytime, but I will especially monitor it during our club meeting’s live stream. In that manner it can be a tool for people listening  to communicate with us in the meeting at Tequila’s.

check it out.

Thanks for the interest.

If you could not be with us last week, then here is your chance. You can listen to last weeks meeting right here bellow this post, or subscribe to our podcast from the iTunes store (search: The San Carlos Computer Club.)

Netflix support info (from the Feb. 18, 2014 meeting)

February 18th, 2014 by

Hi Everybody,

It’s club day again. I come with some new roku/netflix experience that concludes that Netflix is not supported on Roku in Mexico.

Here is a link to a netflix support page that vaguely refers to this:

So this means no Netflix on Roku without VPN. Bummer.

Anyway, come join us at Tequila’s at 9:15am. We’ll cover this topic and more. Please bring your questions. If you can’t join us, then tune-in at our website http://sccClub.org during the meeting for the audio live stream, or later in the week after I’ve posted the recording.

Club Meeting Notifications Update.

February 4th, 2014 by

Today is the day! I’ll SEE YOU GUYS AT TEQUILAS!

email alerts: I heard from Linda, and it looks like she wont be back for another two weeks. We may see her on the 18th. That’s probably the reason we haven’t gotten our regular email reminder.  This isn’t a real problem. At this point,  I hope that people who want regular reminders will follow our Facebook page , or our twitter feed. Both sources are updated when the blog gets updated (for example, when the live stream starts, or when the recorded meetings  are available, or any other additions topics are posted.) I try to always post a remind before our meeting (however, sometimes it is only a couple of hours before.)

Please bring your topics, questions, and be ready to help and be helped.

Come ask questions, get help, and drink coffee.

Listen now to the last meeting (Jan. 21, 2014.) Sorry, we had a Streaming problem, but the podcast is ready.

January 21st, 2014 by

Hi everybody,

Sorry for today. I discovered a problem in the streaming system only a couple of hours before we were going to start. I thought I had it fixed until I showed up at the meeting and couldn’t stream. I think it’s fixed now, and will be ready for next week.

We had a huge group of people today. Aside, from my distractions (trying to fix the stream), we had a very good meeting. We talked about Skype, Windows 8/8.1/7, Amazon instant streaming, IOS multitasking, and much more. If you missed the meeting, then you can get caught up right here.

Also, We decided to postpone meetings until after the holiday. The next meeting will be January 7, 2014.

I’ll see you all next year.

Club Meeting! December 03, 2013 Black Friday Frauding, VPNs, and routers oh my!

December 3rd, 2013 by

Hi everybody,

I’ve had a lot going on. Our daughter Viviana is turning 6 this Saturday, and we’ve been getting prepared. Also, I did a major change to the B&B (anchoragewalkabout.com) website. I have switched it from using static html pages to php pages (it’s  a pain, and if it all goes right, nobody should see any difference at all…hmmm?…why am I doing that? there was good reason, but after four hours of debugging, I lost the reason)…I finally finished, and I was right. Everything looks the same (or only slightly glitchy.) Also,  we had the pleasure of traveling with Russ and Lynn to Hermosillo for immigration papers thanks to Yuya (I’d lost without her.) Anyway, my point is that I’ve been a little busy and that’s why this last meeting is late.

We had a good discussion. We talked about the Black Friday inferior TV products article from USA Today. We answered some good questions on VPNs services and hardware.

Check it out.
