Some ideas from Bergson’s work on perception, memory and intelligence can be applied to the differences we observe in autistic and non-autistic functioning. Though not mentioning autism (which was not identified at the time), Bergson provided profound explanations of some features we find in autistic perception and the reasons why ‘normal’ people do not possess the ‘superabilities’ that are quite common in autism (though these ‘superabilities’ often bring a lot of frustration and anxiety to those involved).
